Breakdown Prevention Guide

The inconvenience of Breaking down is something we could all do without and at times it can be frustrating and distressing. You could be on your way to that important meeting or heading home for a special family occasion and your vehicle breaks down. To reduce the risk of breaking down it is advisable you do some basic checks on a monthly or even weekly basis to help prevent a breakdown callout. Basic checks that we recommend are:

Tyres

Ensure that your tyres are inflated to the correct psi, especially if you regularly drive long distances and travel at higher speeds. Incorrect tyre pressures can result in poor handling, braking and even increase fuel consumption. Check that the tyre tread is above 1.6mm. If it isn’t then change it immediately as it is illegal and could lead to a fine and points on your licence, as well as a greater risk of a flat tyre or blowout.

Check underneath the bonnet

Always check your brake fluid, engine Oil and water are at the correct levels, particularly if you intend to make a long journey. Failure to maintain these levels can seriously damage your vehicle's engine and will almost certainly lead to a vehicle breaking down, eventually - resulting in a hefty repair bill. So it is well worth taking 5 minutes a week to make these checks. Also recharge your battery every few months, especially if you make short trips on a daily basis as your battery will drain down. This is even more vital in winter when you use additional power for headlights and heating which will greatly increase the risk of a breakdown and the added inconvenience of needing a jump start or even a new battery.

Check Your Fuel Gauge

Many breakdowns are caused by vehicles running out of fuel, especially on long journeys or where you think you can get a few more miles out of the tank. As a precaution, we recommend that you fill up your tank with the appropriate fuel before travelling.

Take a spare set of keys

Make sure that you have a spare set of keys or a spare alarm battery, in case you lock yourself out of the vehicle or in case your alarm remote on your keys stops working, this is one of the reasons why breakdown services are called out.
