GEM Motoring Assist was originally established in 1932 as an association of expert motorist's intent on tackling the rising number of accidents by road. Today GEM Motoring Assist has approximately 70,000 members and is the United Kingdom's foremost driver based alliance for road safety. At the forefront of GEM Motoring Assist is the principle that everyone should, while driving on the road, conduct themselves with care, civility and attentiveness to the road and other road users.

Road safety has been vigorously promoted for over 70 years by GEM Motoring Assist through support along with sponsorship of numerous road safety operations and educational activities. These activities and others combined with the very active membership has led to GEM Motoring Assist being recognised as one of the largest and most powerful road safety associations in the UK.

Association demonstrations and road safety activities are funded for road safety aid by GEM Motoring Assist. These currently include stress placed on responsible legislation to permit random alcohol and drug testing on a random basis, to carry out various test drives and crash tests to improve child passenger protection of children in vehicles, improved eyesight standards and testing and encouraging drivers to progress their abilities by undertaking qualified drivers evaluation and advanced training.

In 1978, Breakdown cover has been introduced at a lower cost which has constantly been popular amongst members. The GEM Motoring Assist Rescue Management Centre which is open for 24 hrs and accessible by telephone provides a qualified operator who will rapidly arrange for help from any of GEM Motoring Assist nationwide network which has around 6,000 recovery vehicles. Breakdown cover can be selected from any of the three levels: Roadside level helps you keep moving or will arrange for your car to be taken to a garage. There is also GEM Motoring Assist Homestart cover to fix your vehicle at your home. Recovery Extra level includes home assistance, onward travel cover and urgent accommodation for you and up to six passengers in the UK.

For any breakdown cover, a package of club membership benefits are also available through GEM Motoring Assist along with other membership benefits which also include a magazine on a quarterly basis (Good Motoring) as well as free advice on road safety and insurance discounts, travelling and financial services.
