Travel insurance is essential when going abroad not only to protect yourself but also to cover you for any unexpected costs. It can be incredibly expensive if you have a medical emergency while abroad and if your not adequately insured you could end up with a bill for thousands or even tens of thousands.
There are many different forms of travel insurance and covering yourself for everything would of course, be very costly. Make sure your travel insurance covers your likely activities, for example if you are planning to go skiing or diving you may need extra cover as these might not be covered in your standard policy.
You should seriously consider at least health and medical insurance when travelling abroad. Cover is also available for loss of possessions,legal expenses and personal liability in the event that you are sued for property damage or for causing injury. It is also vital that your travel insurance lasts for the duration of your time abroad.
