This is a real love story with Lonely Planet founders, Tony and Maureen Wheeler meeting, falling in love and doing the boy meets girl thing and disappearing off to Australia taking the overland route through Europe and Asia for a honeymoon that has lasted a lifetime. While doing what honeymooners do in Asia they came up with the idea of preparing a guide based on their first hand experiences after travelling across two continents and on a shoestring they published Across Asia on the Cheap - a few days later they had sold 1,500 copies and the germ of an idea was born that would grow into The Lonely Planet Guide.

The Lonely Planet Guide now has over 300 writers travelling around the globe and exploring the back roads and hidden places that traditional holiday makers would never get to hear about just walking into a travel agents. Experiencing and reporting on which hostel has running water, which cafe will feed you for less than a pound, where you can find some work if you are thousands of miles from home and stony broke and what to do if you end up with some horrible nasty that needs more than the local medicine man - that is what the Lonely Planet Guide is about. Giving you the straight facts on what is around and not telling you where to go and what to do.
