Now that Tesco and Asda are offering lower prices on name-brand groceries, the Sainsbury’s chain has followed suit, offering vouchers that food customers can use to obtain, in effect, an eventual ‘price match’ that will apply to all name-brand groceries in their basket. The system was tested in Northern Ireland, where the chain has a dozen stores.

The system is designed to recalculate the price of all branded goods in a basket using both Asda and Tesco price levels. If Sainbury’s prices turn out to be higher than either of the comparisons, the purchaser will be given a coupon to make up the difference. The coupon, however, cannot be redeemed immediately. Purchasers must wait until their next shopping trip to Sainsbury’s to obtain their discount, a mechanism designed to build store loyalty.

Conditions and Exclusions

The discount system will not apply to every transaction. Only purchases of at least £20 will qualify for discounts, and the vouchers customers receive must be used within 14 days of the original purchase. In addition, the promotion excludes online shopping opportunities.

Mike Coupe, speaking on behalf of the chain, pointed out the advantages to the voucher system. “Unlike some of our competitors we aren’t asking customers to do the hard work to check on our prices. We know shoppers don’t want to have the hassle of having to enter different pieces of information on their computer at home before having to print out a coupon just to check they are getting the best deal.” Under the system, Sainsbury’s will do the legwork for its customers.

Many households have already absorbed increased costs in utilities, but can look forward to even more by the end of the year. If you are unsure just how much more your budget can stand in terms of higher costs for gas and electricity, now is the time to make some changes and find ways to keep those costs as low as possible.

One approach is to consider offers from different providers. If you live in an area that offers more than one provider for a given utility, do some cost comparisons. Make sure you identify all expenses related with making a switch, so there is no opportunity for some unanticipated burden on the monthly income. At the very least, comparing will let you know if you have the best deal possible, or if changing would be in your best interests.

While you may have already taken steps to limit your consumption, take another look. There is a good chance that with a little creativity there are still a few ways to reduce your use of gas and electricity and lower your monthly obligation. Keep in mind that several little changes, while not amounting to much on their own, can in unison have a significant impact on that usage.

Managing utility costs, just like any other financial activity, requires a certain level of dedication. Assess your usage regularly and be open to new ideas on how to control the costs with more precision. While it may seem difficult at times, the reward comes when the balance of the utility bill turns out to be well within the confines of the household budget.

Buying a car is a heady experience that also comes with the practical task of securing adequate car insurance. In a time when money can be very tight, there is the need to do some comparison shopping between different insurance providers and find the car cover that offers the best possible protection while also keeping the premiums within reason. Here are some ways to go about this task.

Never consider any car insurance plan that does not offer adequate cover. The whole idea of insurance is to be protected should certain events come to pass. This means making sure that the total amount of protection associated with different events would be enough to allow you to overcome the obstacle and be back on the road as soon as possible. Along with the amount of the cover, do not forget to make sure any deductibles that may apply are also within your means to manage.

Care should also be taken to look at the costs of cover with different car insurance providers. What you want is the same level of cover at the lowest premium possible. Temper this with the need to sign with a provider with a proven reputation for honesty and reliability. A low rate accomplishes nothing if the provider is known to find ways to disallow benefits or takes an inordinately long time to review a claim. Balance the need to stay within budget with the necessity of obtaining enough cover from a reputable provider, then see what type of plans are within your reach.

With reports indicating that inflation is eroding the ability of households to get as much value for their money even in comparison to a year ago, the need to pay close attention to food purchases is greater than ever. The goal is to buy what you need to prepare balanced nutritious meals while still avoiding going over budget. Here are a couple of tips.

Practice portion control with your purchases. Many consumers do a very good job of planning meals and using lists to shop, but end up preparing food that is left over and ultimately thrown out. Adjust recipes to prepare smaller dishes that are sufficient for a meal, but not so much that the rest is left to spoil. Any leftovers can also be frozen and used to create other dishes at a later date.

Know which spots in your favourite supermarket are troublesome for you and your budget, and avoid them if at all possible. If you cannot resist buying extra candy and sweets, stay away from those aisles and any displays that are placed strategically around the store. Make sure you understand the floor plan of the supermarket and organise your list so it is possible to go directly to what you need and get out before temptation can overcome your good intentions.

Also consider doing your grocery shopping with cash only. It is much easier to overspend when using a debit or credit card. Only take what you need to buy the items on your list, and the chances of succumbing to impulse shopping will be greatly minimised.

A recent survey indicates that the majority of households in the UK do not have sufficient life insurance cover to aid in retiring end of life expenses. While understandable given the strain of first the recession and more recently the rising costs associated with many essential goods and services, this lack of cover could have catastrophic results for those who are left behind and must struggle to settle an estate. Here are some suggestions on how to determine if you have enough life insurance to prevent additional hardship on your loved ones.

Begin with your total indebtedness as of right now. Determine how much it would take to settle those current debts, including your mortgage, any outstanding balances on loans, and even your credit card debt. While the hope is that your debt decreases over time, preparing as if you would not be around tomorrow is often the best approach. Keep in mind that any proceeds from the insurance policy that are not needed to settle debts can usually come in handy for other expenses, such as paying for your funeral arrangements.

Do take the time to project what other expenses may be incurred at the end of life. Allowing for the potential of at least some medical bills not covered by a health insurance plan as well as funeral costs and the expenses associated with settling an estate can be a very good idea. Add those projections to the level of your current indebtedness and you should be able to come up with a viable amount of life insurance to acquire.

Even if you cannot afford that amount of cover right now, identify how much you can afford to make in monthly premium payments and secure as much cover as possible. Over time, many providers will allow you to increase that amount as your financial circumstances improve. In the interim, you have the benefit of knowing that at least some of your end of life expenses can be covered without creating issues for your loved ones.

Word that retail giant Tesco is about to launch a full scale reduction in prices on food items has many consumers wondering what this will mean for food prices at other stores. The fact is that if the chain does lower standard prices significantly, it could set off an explosion of not only price reductions but special discounts consumers can use to stock their larders and keep the food budget under control.

In order to make the most of these reductions, always prepare a list before heading to the supermarket. Do some rudimentary planning with the meals, so you can match what you buy at the grocery store with what is already at home in the food cupboard. This will make it easier to always have enough on hand to put together a credible meal, without the need to run out to the store to pick up one or two things and end up spending more than you planned.

Take the time to compare not only prices but the quantity of contents in the packaging. What may appear to be a bargain at first glance may, in fact, be less so if the can with the lower price contains a smaller quantity. Since some producers have used this strategy of late, do not make any assumptions just because the cans are the same size.

Whatever happens to heat up a food price war, taking the time to plan in advance and stick to your list will go a long way toward helping manage your monthly food expenses. With a little luck, you may even have a little left over to place into savings, something that should always be a goal.

Going away on holiday is something many people look forward to each year. For many households, planning the finances for the holiday is essential, especially when there is very little room in the budget for this type of activity. In order to make the most of your holiday, it is important to not only plan well in advance, but also keep your spending under control while away from home.

One approach is to identify in advance what type of charges will be assessed on your debit card for obtaining cash or even using the card for purchases. Depending on where you are spending the holiday, it may be to your advantage to purchase and load a prepaid credit card that will not incur those types of charges. Many of these types of cards can be loaded directly from your bank accounts, something you can do online while on the holiday if you need a little more money.

Also think in terms of what you want to do on the holiday and take along the right clothing. While buying new things while on holiday is fun, it is not the best way to stay within your budget. Pack clothing that can be mixed and matched to create several different ensembles, making it possible to have the right outfit for just about any occasion.

Spend some time finding places of interest that are well known to locals and not necessarily included on tourist routes. You will get to see something that is not on everyone’s list, plus there is a good chance the prices will be a little more affordable. With a little planning, it is possible to keep your spending in check, and still enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Many consumers have noticed a trend with some of their favourite food brands. While the prices may be the same, the quantity has been reduced slightly. This effectively means that with some packaged foods, consumers are getting less for their money. In order to combat this, here are a couple of tips to employ on your next visit to the grocery store.

Before automatically reaching for your usual brand, take some time to compare both price and quantity with other brands, including any house brands offered by the supermarket. The idea is to identify if that favoured brand is providing the most in terms of quantity for the price, and if there are any other brands that offer more for the same or less money. Take along a calculator so the comparison process is a little easier. Given the range of brands in canned and other packaged foods carried at Tesco and Asda, there is a good chance you can find at least a few products that will provide greater overall value.

Make it a point to look below eye level when identifying other brands to evaluate. Typically, the items are arranged on the shelves so the brands that the market wishes to push each week are higher on the shelves, while other items that may constitute treasure for your budget are assigned to the lower shelves. You may find a new brand that has similar quality to your current favourite, but offers more product for the same or less cost. When that is the case, your food budget can be stretched a bit, and alleviate some of the stress on your monthly income.

Gift giving can be a bit of a challenge, particularly in this day and age when everyone seems to have the latest in electronics, home goods and fashion apparel. Online shopping makes it easy to buy the items of our dreams at discounted prices. However, where does that leave the gift giver? I know each time I have to buy a gift, I must go through family and friends to find out what might be appropriate or to find something unique that the person doesn’t already have. As a practical shopper, I also want to ensure that the item I purchase isn’t going to end up in a cupboard, the bin, or on a shelf somewhere. For finding that perfect, unusual and useful item, I find that The Gift Experience is the best place to shop.

As I pride myself on being able to find that fun and unusual gift, The Gift Experience is ideal for me. Who doesn’t love the newspaper with a fake headline? If you tend to lean toward more practical items, you may want to consider a calendar, personalised mug or diary. Perhaps a day at the spa or an exciting experience day is more to your liking. You can always tag along for that day of cooking gourmet meals, ice climbing, dancing or recording your own song/video!

For more ideas and ways to save extra money on gift items, check back to our site on a regular basis for voucher codes and special offers.

As more providers of gas and electricity increase rates, households face the task of determining how to manage those costs more effectively. There are several ways to go about this task, ranging from replacing older appliances with more energy efficient models to shopping around a bit for utility providers, and even choosing to make some lifestyle changes that aid in decreasing dependency on those utilities.

One way to lower energy consumption is to invest in buying new appliances that are rated as more energy efficient than the ones currently in use in the household. While this approach does demand an outlay of cash on the front end, the result is that the consumption can often decrease noticeably in the very first full month of use. If you have been looking for a good reason to replace major kitchen appliances, this may be your chance.

For people with agreements in place with certain utility providers that are up for renewal, now would be a good time to see what the competition has to offer. Be very exacting when comparing terms between your incumbent provider and other options. Make sure there are no hidden fees or any additional charges that will appear at a later date. Do not make a change unless you are sure the benefits include both a reduction in costs and at least the same level of customer support currently received.

If all else fails, change the way you use the gas and electricity. Adjust the thermostat so less energy is used in controlling the climate in the home. Do the laundry in cold water rather than hot. Plan meals to include at least some dishes that do not require cooking or reheating. Most households can make a few minor changes in the way they consume utilities and make a noticeable difference in their energy costs.
