The latest round of price increases have driven the average price of electricity up more than 11%, with gas prices increasing recently by more than 17%. These increases have caused Prime Minister David Cameron to meet with six of the nation’s major suppliers of energy. Also at the summit were representatives of groups that promote the interests of consumers.

Energy companies themselves report that the price increases are the result of the increase in wholesale prices that they themselves must pay, but some industry analysts dispute that, claiming that companies are making a profit of £125 for every household supplied. That figure would indicate the profits are at a higher level than in any year since 2004.

According to recent research, more than 70% of Britons are finding the energy price increases difficult to pay out of their on-going income stream. To meet the higher prices, residents of the UK are drawing money from savings or putting payments on their credit cards. Some are also using overdraft features on their accounts to make their payments to utilities.

One focus of the summit was the importance of comparison shopping for better rates on gas and electricity. Switching from one energy provider to another can often help consumers save a significant amount of money. The summit will also discuss the issue of subsidies that can help consumers save money on their energy bills by enabling them to implement energy-saving techniques, such as installing insulation in their walls and ceilings.

A recent investigation has revealed that six of the largest energy utilities in the UK give inconsistent and even inaccurate answers when consumers call them asking about low-cost options for gas and electricity. The energy companies surveyed included Southern Electric, British Gas and E.ON. The companies offer hundreds of different tariffs with rate structures so complex that consumers may need assistance in finding the best deal in their individual circumstances. However, the answers provided by company employees were less than illuminating in many cases.

During the survey, each utility was called a dozen times over the course of a week. Survey participants specifically asked to be provided with information about the option with the lowest possible cost. In almost one-third of all calls, they were not told about the cheapest rate available. In addition, information furnished about a variety of discounts available through such structures as cashback arrangements was not always accurate.

Part of the difficulty that customers have in finding the lowest possible tariff results from the complex rules that companies have established for their pricing policies. In some cases, low-cost options are only available to customers who arrange the service online. Others offer one or more months of free service if a customer signs a contract with a long enough term. It can be challenging for customers to find the lowest service option when presented with so many variables, yet the investigation demonstrates that not even calling on the phone to personally speak with service representatives will bring clarity to the issue.

Many households have already absorbed increased costs in utilities, but can look forward to even more by the end of the year. If you are unsure just how much more your budget can stand in terms of higher costs for gas and electricity, now is the time to make some changes and find ways to keep those costs as low as possible.

One approach is to consider offers from different providers. If you live in an area that offers more than one provider for a given utility, do some cost comparisons. Make sure you identify all expenses related with making a switch, so there is no opportunity for some unanticipated burden on the monthly income. At the very least, comparing will let you know if you have the best deal possible, or if changing would be in your best interests.

While you may have already taken steps to limit your consumption, take another look. There is a good chance that with a little creativity there are still a few ways to reduce your use of gas and electricity and lower your monthly obligation. Keep in mind that several little changes, while not amounting to much on their own, can in unison have a significant impact on that usage.

Managing utility costs, just like any other financial activity, requires a certain level of dedication. Assess your usage regularly and be open to new ideas on how to control the costs with more precision. While it may seem difficult at times, the reward comes when the balance of the utility bill turns out to be well within the confines of the household budget.

As more providers of gas and electricity increase rates, households face the task of determining how to manage those costs more effectively. There are several ways to go about this task, ranging from replacing older appliances with more energy efficient models to shopping around a bit for utility providers, and even choosing to make some lifestyle changes that aid in decreasing dependency on those utilities.

One way to lower energy consumption is to invest in buying new appliances that are rated as more energy efficient than the ones currently in use in the household. While this approach does demand an outlay of cash on the front end, the result is that the consumption can often decrease noticeably in the very first full month of use. If you have been looking for a good reason to replace major kitchen appliances, this may be your chance.

For people with agreements in place with certain utility providers that are up for renewal, now would be a good time to see what the competition has to offer. Be very exacting when comparing terms between your incumbent provider and other options. Make sure there are no hidden fees or any additional charges that will appear at a later date. Do not make a change unless you are sure the benefits include both a reduction in costs and at least the same level of customer support currently received.

If all else fails, change the way you use the gas and electricity. Adjust the thermostat so less energy is used in controlling the climate in the home. Do the laundry in cold water rather than hot. Plan meals to include at least some dishes that do not require cooking or reheating. Most households can make a few minor changes in the way they consume utilities and make a noticeable difference in their energy costs.

According to data released by the Office for National Statistics, household utilities can be expected to continue increasing. This does not bode well for households that are already having difficulty managing the costs of gas and electricity as well as water and telephone expenses. With many consumers working with a limited amount of income and not much potential of seeing a wage increase any time soon, the most viable course of action may be to either make some changes in utility providers or at least find ways to reduce usage.

If there is more than one provider available in the area, take some time to do some cost comparisons between the plans. Often, this can allow consumers to move to a provider who has everything they need but without charges for services they never use. Always make sure the pricing quoted is not some type of introductory offer that will eventually increase to a rate that is more than your current provider charges.

Also take some time to evaluate how utilities are used around the house. It may be that making a few changes in lifestyle will result in lower usage, which in turn means a reduction in the monthly cost for those services. Making an investment in weatherproofing the home may also help reduce monthly costs, since it will take less energy to keep the interior at a comfortable temperature. Even if you think there is no way to reduce your usage, take a second look. Just about everyone can find at least a few ways to reduce dependency on utilities and save a little money over the course of the month.

As many households know too well, inflation has an adverse effect on the spending power of consumers. The same amount of income that once served the budget well simply will no longer cover those same expenses. In order to offset the higher prices that are part of the overall process of inflation, there is often the need to make some changes in how the household operates.

While some household expenses such as the mortgage or car payments are fixed and cannot be adjusted, many other budget line items can be reduced. For example, it is possible to trim the food budget by planning meals more carefully and choosing to shop for bargains on the items needed to prepare those meals. Tips such as always shopping with a list, planning the list in advance based on what is on sale that week, and refusing to buy anything that is not on the list, no matter how tempting, can quickly make a difference in how much a household spends on food each month.

The same general approach can be taken to manage the cost of utilities. If your gas and electricity plans are not structured with fixed amounts each month, find ways to reduce consumption. Little things such as closing the drapes and blocking cracks around windows and under doors will reduce energy consumption. That reduced consumption translates into savings that lead to less stress on the household budget.

Typically, there is no one way to reduce expenses and stretch the income further each month. More often, households will employ several different strategies in order to reduce expenses and stay within the budget. While each of these may only result in a small amount of savings, together they can be quite impressive.

As with many services, if you are a mobile phone user, it pays to compare mobile phone services from time to time. Depending on the type of plan you have in place and how long you have been with the same provider, taking some time to look into the offerings of the competition may be well worth your while.

When comparing your current mobile phone plan with plans offered by other providers, always look beyond the quoted price for the basic service. The goal is to find out what other charges may apply, such as additional costs for calling someone on another network, making or receiving calls to international locations, and what type of access to internet functions are available as part of the basic plan. Ideally, you want to identify plans that offer everything you currently have, but at a lower price. If you can manage to also secure a few more features without spending any more money, that is all the better.

Before making a change, do some investigation into the provider. Use online and other resources to determine what type of service issues the provider seems to encounter more often, and how those issues are resolved. Beware of complaints about poor customer service, dropped connections and other indications that while the price may be right, the service level is inferior.

Even if you do not change from your current mobile phone provider, a little comparison time will help you determine if you are still getting a good deal, and may even make you appreciate having the service you do.

With utility prices continuing to increase, many households are having to devote a larger share of their monthly income to covering heating and cooling costs. This creates a situation in which other essentials may have to be reduced or even done without altogether, just so the gas and electricity can be paid. If you find yourself in this position, there are a few things you can do to better your circumstances.

First, assess how you are using your utilities. Something as simple as setting a thermostat a little lower in winter and a little higher in summer can make a difference to your monthly utility costs. Opt for lighter clothing during warm weather and put on a sweater during cooler times, so you can still be somewhat comfortable.

Also take the time to weatherproof your home. Sealing tiny openings around windows and doors can make it much easier to maintain a comfortable temperature inside, by minimising the leakage of heated or cooled air from inside. By using less energy, you save money on the utility bills.

Do not forget to look around for better energy tariffs. You may be able to lock in a much better rate with a different provider. Compare terms and prices to make sure there are no ancillary charges that drive up the average monthly cost, then decide whether to make a change or stay with your current provider. By making a few changes and arranging your utility usage to best advantage, it is possible to enjoy your home without spending money that could be allocated to other essentials.

With so much talk of utility costs moving upward over the next several months, it is not unusual for consumers to begin taking a second look at fixed rate tariffs. This is especially true for those who are in a position to switch with a minimum of penalties or charges. Depending on the terms of the tariff under consideration, this approach may be a good fit for your household budget.

There are several points to consider before assuming that a fixed rate tariff will help your position in terms of managing the costs of gas and electricity as well as other utilities. One factor is the actual amount that you will be charged from one billing period to the next. Obviously, you want to make sure that figure works well within the confines of your budget as well as how that figure compares to your historical cost on actual usage. If this process will help to balance out the payments over the course of the tariff and make staying within budget an easier task for at least a few of those months, then the approach is worth considering.

Also take into account the duration of the tariff. This is important, since you want to lock in the best possible terms for as long as the current upward trend in utility costs prevails. At the same time, you do want the ability to switch at some point if the plan turns out to not work as well as you anticipated. Talk with providers about all terms and options, then settle on the approach that will produce the most benefit for the foreseeable future.

With word that British Gas will increase prices shortly, consumers face the task of dealing with yet another increase in household utility costs. With both gas and electricity costs increasing between now and the end of the year, making changes to other budget line items will be the only way to cope for many. If you find yourself in this position, here are a couple of tips that may help.

Chances are that at least some of your income is being consumed by impulse buying. To close the gap, make it a point to never shop without a list, and only purchase the items on your list. While it may be difficult at first, the savings that you see at the end of the month will go a long way toward offsetting those higher utility bills and be worth the time and effort.

Look closely at all your variable line items in the budget, including the utilities if you are not on some sort of fixed rate plan. You will likely find at least a couple of areas in which you can reduce those expenses with relatively little trouble and divert those funds to covering the higher utility costs. For example, if you budget a certain amount for meals out and general entertainment, reduce that item and stay home an additional night each week.

While you cannot control the actions of the utility companies, it is possible to control what happens in your household. That includes reducing usage of gas and electricity if you are not on fixed plans, since by using less you reduce the overall amount of your bills. Look closely at how you spend and consume, and you are sure to find at least a couple of ways to save a little money.
