Protecting Your Financial Information Online

With the growing use of social networking web sites and various types of online financial transactions, many people worry about the security of their data, especially in terms of credit card numbers and access to their banking accounts. Fortunately, there are ways to still enjoy shopping and paying bills online without subjecting yourself to a strong threat of identity theft. Here are some tips on how to be safe while online.

Most financial institutions now utilise multiple layers of security in order to protect the accounts of their clients. In addition to a user name and password, many of these sites now require either verification of an image chosen by the account holder or the response to a question associated with the account itself. These added steps delay entry to the account for only a few seconds, but greatly enhance the security of making a mortgage payment from your checking account or whatever task you have in mind.

When making online purchases, many people are choosing to use prepaid credit cards. The idea is that even if the card number is somehow intercepted, the amount of damage that can be done to your finances is somewhat limited, since the card only carries a fixed amount. This means fewer worries about how to recoup the losses in the short term and keep the household budget intact.

Never purchase anything from a web site that is not rated as secure. Most browsers will warn users if a site is not secure. Also, most secure sites will provide proof of the security certification on the home page of the site. If you are not sure if a site is secure or not, don’t take the chance – shop elsewhere.

Last, never provide personal information on a social networking profile that could be used to track down your financial data. There is no need to discuss matters such as who you bank with or what credit cards you have. General information is fine, but anything that hints at finances should be kept from public view.
