Saving Money on Your Food Budget

basket-of-food-shoppingMany households have realised that the cost of food has gone up in the past year.  When the budget already leaves very little room for margin, a sudden leap on staples such as tea, dry goods and other basics can create a great deal of inconvenience.  Fortunately, there are ways to prepare nutritious meals and keep within your food budget.

One approach is to plan your meals in advance.  This allows you to inventory the pantry before doing any grocery shopping and prepare a list of exactly what you need.  A list will serve two purposes.  First, you won’t find yourself purchasing items you already have, and you are more likely to resist impulse buys if you promise yourself to stick with the list only.

Look for discounted items that you would buy anyway.  Why pay full price next week when the item is on sale this week?  Taking advantage of sales will save a lot of money over the course of a month.

Don’t limit your shopping to the stores down the lane.  Go online.  Try sites like Wiltshire Farm Foods or Food Full Stop.  With the use of discounts and voucher codes, you may find ordering from the sites very cost effective as well as convenient.

Last, consider buying fresh food rather than packaged and processed products.  While convenient, many are more expensive per serving than the fresh foods.  The extra preparation time will be worth it when you see how well you can eat without spending any extra money at all.

Try one or more of these tips with your next food shopping expedition.  Chances are you will be surprised at how making a few simple adjustments can lower your food costs and help you stay within budget.
