What You Should Know About Working From Home

home-officeWhen most people think about working from home, they see the immediate advantages. There are no long commutes to work, no office gossips to deal, with, and you can dress as casually as you like. However, there are some issues to consider before you jump into the growing pool of people who now telecommute to the workplace.

The first fact to consider is that not all people who work from home have company supplied benefits. Many work as independent contractors, which means they are responsible for submitting their own taxes and keeping up with their general business related expenses. If you are not proficient with accounting, make sure you have an accountant that can help you keep your affairs in order.

You will also be responsible for supplying your own insurance coverage, such as life or health. Compare offers from various insurance providers to find a policy that has terms that meet your needs and is within your means to afford.

You may find that the lack of co-workers in close proximity proves to make your workday longer. Many people thrive on the social interaction that comes with working in an office, plant, or store. Unless you are the type who enjoys solitude in the workplace, working from home is probably not the best situation for you.

The fact is not everyone is suited for working at home, simply because they require supervision. If you are not a self-motivated individual, you will find that all sorts of distractions prevent you from accomplishing your daily assignments. In short order, you will be out of work and looking for some other way to make money.

Yes, there are disadvantages to working from home and this article shows the gloom and doom side of it. But there are more advantages to having a home office than a corporate office. You’re able to set your own hours, spend more time with your family and increase your productivity because co-workers aren’t around to waste your time. Technology makes it possible for anyone to work anywhere. Why wouldn’t everyone work from home?
