About Practical Action

Practical Action is a charity focusing on improving the lives of people in developing countries. The charity focuses on providing appropriate technology to people who can benefit dramatically from relatively simple changes in the tools they have available as a part of their daily lives. Practical Action was founded in 1966 by the economist Ernst Friedrich \"Fritz\" Schumacher, based on his observations about the inefficiency of aid in the form of capital intensive technologies from developed nations to poorer ones. His theory of \'intermediate technology\' is the basis of Practical Action\'s operations, meaning that the aid provided should be appropriate to the situation intended - for example, providing water cleansing equipment that can be used without external power. Indeed, the charity was originally named the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDC), with the name only changing to Practical Action in 2005. Much of the charity\'s work focuses on Kenya, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and the Sudan, although projects exist in the surrounding countries, and Practical Action was heavily involved in the 2007 Tsunami relief efforts, with technology being put in place to help residents to deal better with a future disaster. As well as reducing vulnerability to natural disasters, the charity\'s work focuses on encouraging market capability and fair trade for the poor, improving general access to services such as energy and water, and enabling access to new technologies, particularly media, to the world\'s poorest regions. The charity benefits from HRH The Prince of Wales as patron, although relies entirely on public donations, which can be made easily through their website, with the option of Gift Aid added for donations from UK taxpayers.
