The beginnings of the Aspinall foundation were laid by John Aspinall in the 1950s, following the purchase of the Howletts Animal Park, and a further park, at Port Lympne in the early 1950s to cope with the increasing number of animals the organisation cared for. The parks were initially bought due to John Aspinall's personal interest in conservation, but were open to the public by the mid 1970s. The Aspinall Foundation is now notable for the close contact it encourages in parks between keepers and animals, as well as with visitors, and the parks have been recognised as having a high success rate in breeding rare species. As well as the two parks in the UK, the Aspinall Foundation also operate two gorilla centres in Congo (at Lefini Reserve) and in Gabon (at Bateke Plateau National Park), allowing for the rescue and care of wild gorillas, and over fifty animals have now been released back into safety there. The Aspinall Foundation's approach is different from other ordinary zoos, with the aim being to always reintroduce the animals back into their natural habitat wherever this is possible. The idea of the parks' existence is that they should be the next best thing to the natural habitat, where reintroduction is not possible. As well as visiting the unique parks, you can book special experience days allowing you to be a keeper for a day. It is also possible for you to sponsor an animal via the Aspinall Foundation, which makes a great present for anyone interested in animals when combined with a visit. Other ways to support them include weddings, corporate events and special group bookings for members of the public, of the country halls available at the parks, which in the past have accommodated royal visitors.
