About Tono

TONO, established in 1928, works to protect the performing rights of music performed in Norway, both international and domestic, and is the only organisation in Norway to give licences for public performances of music on behalf of composers and authors. They protect the performing, financial and legal rights of Norwegian and foreign composers, authors and publishers of music, and work in cooperation with around 50 similar organisations around the world as part of the international organisation CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers). A Norwegian corporation that administers copyrights for music, TONO is owned and governed by its membership which is made up of composers, music publishers and text-writers. Through the managing agreement, the originators give TONO an exclusive right to administer the performing rights of the members in Norway.

The right for authors and composers to receive compensation when their work is played publicly was written into Norwegian law on 12th May 1961 ("Lov om opphavsrett til åndsverk"). The only exception to this law is when the last surviving owner of the proprietary rights has passed away 70 years ago or more. The law states that a permit, or licence, must be obtained to perform music in public and a fee must be paid. This applies, among others, to stores, hotels, buses, TV, radio, ships, concerts and parties.
