Trainline is an online and telephone facility which sells tickets for travel on British train services. Formed in 1997, Trainline was formerly part of the Virgin Group and is now owned by private equity investors and management. The business has expanded significantly in the last eight years, acquiring its main online competitor Qjump from National Express Group in February 2004. Employing over 100 people at its offices in London and Edinburgh, it also has outsource arrangements with IT and call centre service providers where it uses the employ of a further 450 people.

Trainline is now the largest retailer of UK rail tickets, selling 18 per cent of all tickets by value. They offer all published UK rail travel fares, with the exception of some temporary promotional fares, and feature train journey times for rail travel throughout the country. Although the company is licensed by the Association of Train Operating Companies and its systems are accredited by the rail industry, it is independent of any train operating company and impartial. This means that its systems search through the full range of possible journeys based on customer preference such as price or time.

In addition to the online service provided direct to customers operated under its own brands, Trainline provides website services for 14 of the 20 UK train operating companies operating under their own brands, as well as providing a rail business travel service directly to a number of large blue chip corporations, travel management companies and travel agents.

The Trainline website incorporates images and ideas from its national advertising campaigns, and includes in its service deals on hotels and theatre shows. The website also has a number of innovative eco-friendly gadgets and tools such as the carbon calculator which shows how much carbon is used in comparison to using a car, a best fare finder, a ticket alert service and general tips to make train travel even cheaper.
