Travelodge is the second largest budget hotel brand in the UK behind Premier Inn, and the third biggest hotel chain by numbers of bedrooms with approximately 20,000. There are over three hundred Travelodge hotels throughout the country which are mainly located beside motorways and major roads, although more and more hotels are being opened in city centres. The first hotel was opened in 1985 at Barton Under Needwood on the A38 near Lichfield. There are now over 380 hotels throughout the UK, Ireland and Spain, and these should not be confused with those in the Travelodge brands in other countries such as the United States.

A new room design has been introduced in the new hotels which feature a new colour scheme and LCD televisions. In most hotels, double rooms, family rooms and disabled rooms are available, and all rooms feature an en-suite bathroom, free tea & coffee, and a digital television. Eating and drinking facilities vary; some hotels are located beside a Little Chef and in the town and city centre locations, 'Bar Cafes' within the hotel are common. Breakfast and evening meals are available here and drinks can be purchased from the licensed bars.

The Travelodge website is smart and well presented, with the latest offers and discounts displayed on the home page. During the summer of 2009, Travelodge are adding numerous locations to the 'Great British Summer Getaway' offer which offers rooms from just £19 per night. The Travelodge price check gathers prices from one thousand competitor hotels to ensure that the chain offers the best value.

Travelodge markets to individuals and businesses and has created the business account card which offers corporate packages including up to 8 weeks free credit, a fully manageable online account and qualification for the Argos reward points scheme. A paid-for wireless internet connection is also offered in most hotels, and business facilities including meeting rooms and study rooms can be made available on request.
